“They’re doing their own thing here and creating something that’s singularly unique.” –Juror John Frane
AN.ONYMOUS, led by Iman Ansari and Marta Nowak, designed the 24,000-square-foot Northstar Medical Campus near Fort Worth, TX. The campus, which spans three acres, includes three single-story medical office buildings centered around a public plaza and landscaped grounds. The primary building, a 9,000-square-foot office for Northstar Dermatology, was completed in January 2022. The remaining two buildings are expected to be finished by 2024.
The project challenges traditional architectural design and medical office planning through the innovative use of simulation tools and representation techniques. These tools allowed AN.ONYMOUS to create a dynamic environment with varied visual and physical interactions. The floor plan of Northstar Dermatology features two overlapping rectangular areas, each housing clinical zones with doctors’ offices, nurse stations, and examination rooms. The subtle rotation of these areas forms irregular octagonal volumes, facilitating circulation and communication around the nurse stations. This rotational design is mirrored in the other campus buildings, creating a cohesive interplay around the central plaza.
The innovative design process used agent-based computer simulations to model the movement of healthcare users, optimizing the floor plan for efficiency and reducing obstructions. The resulting layout enhances the interaction and movement within the space, aligning with daily activity patterns.
The project also incorporates a unique approach to materials and construction. The façade uses a thin brick system, complying with local building requirements while offering a modern interpretation of traditional masonry. The glazed black and white brick veneer creates varied visual effects throughout the day, while the interior finishes use different flooring materials to distinguish between public and private areas, aiding in wayfinding.
The central staff area features a custom white oak reception desk with CNC-cut panels, extending this material into the nurse stations and examination rooms. Glass dividers with dichroic film separate public and private areas, ensuring both connection and privacy.
Northstar Dermatology reimagines the design and function of medical facilities, using advanced simulation tools and modern materials to create a contemporary, efficient, and visually engaging space.
