Project Description
This transformation of the 25,000-square-foot Oceanique Resort in Goa, India, from a traditional space into a masterfully redesigned boutique resort is striking. The resort features four two-level buildings that house 50 guest rooms along with three main public spaces: a lobby, bar, and restaurant. Using a mix of forms, materials, and lighting, Sanjay Puri Architects captured the essence of the region’s rugged beauty in a series of unique areas sewn together by one common theme: fluidity.
Unlike the closed-off sections of the original main building, free-flowing partitions now visually open up the public spaces. The reception area features “moving” partitions made of stacked plywood, which are mirrored on the envelope of the bar that sits diagonally across. Curvilinear gypsum panels are suspended at varying heights over the lobby and create a sculptural effect. The bar is constructed of stacked plywood sheets that merge the walls with the ceiling, and bamboo screens add texture to the restaurant. Outside, a large veranda provides al fresco dining that overlooks the new lagoon pool. Guest rooms echo the property’s main theme while also including elements to make them appear larger, such as a curved panel that merges into the wall and houses the TV. —by Erin Ansley
