Project Description

The major design objective of the overall home renovation was to maximize the surrounding mountain views, and to open up the house, extending the indoors out to take full advantage of the surrounding Palm Springs climate, while also updating the interior finishes. The kitchen design is central to this concept, as it’s open to the great room and an integral part of that space. Thus, the material selections required continuity and neutral colors were used throughout, which further emphasize the exterior views and natural outdoor colors and scenery.

For cost efficiency, the overall layout of the kitchen remains consistent with the original, utilizing existing utility locations. However, the center island was completely removed and re-built at approximately double in size compared to the original, extending into what was previously a breakfast nook. This much larger island becomes the focal point of the kitchen and functions extremely well for both food prep as well as entertaining. Also, what was previously a dark corner in the breakfast nook was transformed from drywall to glass and original sliding glass doors were replaced with larger Fleetwood sliders. This further expanded the views while also increasing energy efficiency.

Another focal point of the kitchen is the natural stone – Calacatta Marble – which was chosen to create the “waterfall” island as well as the counter tops and backsplash. The lighting further enhances the design, with LED strip lighting above and below cabinetry and below island seating, for a dramatic effect in the evening.

We believe this project deserves an award because it was highly successful in achieving the design objectives and dramatically updated the space, while still keeping within the original layout for added cost efficiency.
