Park Place was designed for homeowners who were downsizing by seeking a smaller luxury custom home (4,000 sf) on a small view lot (15,000 sf). They wanted an open floor plan for entertaining and spacious outdoor living spaces to enjoy the Arizona climate and to showcase the mountain and city light views. In addition to three bedrooms and four baths, they requested several luxury amenities usually found in larger homes, such as a casita, wine room, his/her toilet rooms and oversized garage bays. The outside design was to be Spanish Colonial architecture with an interior feel of something between “1930’s vintage” meets the “industrial period,” while also utilizing a blend of reclaimed and classic elements throughout the inside and outside of the home. Incorporating the client requests into a smaller luxury home design and lot size, while adhering to the strict architectural guidelines required by the upscale gated neighborhood, presented a challenging task. As the designing began on this home, it became apparent the Kitchen and Great Room would be the two focal points of the house. These two rooms were ultimately designed to incorporate livable space that would flow between the two rooms and also open to outside patios to maximize indoor/outdoor entertaining options. Sliding Pocket Doors that disappear into the wall when opened to the back patios were utilized on one wall of the Great Room, while an authentic barn door on a sliding track separates the Great Room from the Den on the opposite wall. Large clerestory windows and 19’ ceilings helped keep the look of the rooms light and bright and Savant & Lutron home control features make climate and lighting control simple. One end of the Great Room opens completely to the Kitchen, and with the visibility of the Kitchen from the Great Room, a design was needed that would blend gourmet cooking amenities with entertaining functionality and appear presentation worthy at all times. A large marble-top Kitchen island was positioned close to the Great Room entry for dining, seating space and food placement while entertaining. A separate Mud Room with lockers was added to keep clutter out of sight and provide an additional area for pantry items and storage. Stainless steel appliances, a Wine Captain, a separate bar serving area and a custom stainless steel range hood combined to round out the functional end of this state-of-the-art Kitchen. Complementing the functional components of the Kitchen were a gray and taupe color scheme, black granite and white marble countertops, vintage and industrial hardware and lighting fixtures, a painted coffered ceiling, classic white and black glass-panel cabinetry, wood beams and a reclaimed hardwood floor. The combination of these items resulted in a sleek timeless style for the Kitchen and the overall home. The design exceeded the homeowner expectations of utilizing space and materials to create a “functional,” yet "industrial retro” style for their new Arizona home.
