The kitchen of this extensively remodeled home was somehow always left behind, a relic of a different –and unflattering—era. Our work seamlessly updates these spaces and integrates them into the modern, clean aesthetic of the rest of the home. Since the owners are enthusiastic art collectors, the galley kitchen is designed with large expanses of open walls, as a gallery waiting to be curated. The width of the kitchen is rather narrow with only five feet clear between the two walls of cabinetry. The demands of this tight space are magnified by its need to simultaneously perform as gallery, highly functional work space, and circulation route from the front entry to the back yard. Fixtures and appliances are grouped adjacent to one another to accommodate efficient workflow, while storage needs are neatly packed behind custom wood cabinets to maintain the clean lines consistent with the rest of the home. Three small existing skylights are capitalized upon, focusing a once-lost feature into a soft linear stream of light extending the entire length of the northern countertop. The project radically expands the sense of openness and movement through the space, despite working within the existing compartmentalized galley layout.
