Project Description
This wellness retreat located within a private estate on the San Francisco peninsula sits on its own one-acre site, but is part of a larger master plan, serving as an amenity to the main residence. Within the constraints of constructing two accessory structures on their own piece of land, two simple building forms have emerged that are connected to the main residence and gardening conservatory on either side. Isolated in its own secluded environment, the buildings are positioned in a way that welcome the visitor through an intimate spa court and reorient the user to an expansive, gracious garden experience beyond. The spaces consist of an exercise facility overlooking the surrounding landscape, and a yoga studio and spa treatment suite complete with an outdoor shower garden. Traditional building materials of stone, wood, and metal blend with the natural environment but are applied with a contemporary aesthetic. A deck, connecting the two structures and shaded by a steel trellis, overlooks an expansive lawn and crescent-shaped berm that provides a sense of enclosure and intimacy to the space. The designers' primary objective was to achieve the vision of the homeowners to have a unique, tranquil environment to relax and pursue their interests Although accessory buildings to the main house, the design is a complete departure from the traditional style of the home, in keeping with the owner's desire to have a true escape to a walled environment with a resort feel and aesthetic.
