This kitchen and master suite renovation by aamodt/plumb architects transforms a rambling Cambridge shingle-style home into a modern gallery for artwork, artifacts, scholarly pursuits and family gatherings.

On the first floor, the kitchen was redesigned using a mixture of refined and rustic materials reflecting the clients’ interests. White high gloss, semi-custom cabinets, custom plywood with raw steel shelves, and a concrete countertop give the space a modern but crafted feel. The exposed joinery of the shelving reveals the hand of the carpenter and provides a wonderful setting for the collection of African bowls and primitive artwork that the owners display. The simple lines of the butler’s pantry act as a frame for the owners’ art, hanging on the wall beyond. Large windows were added and the ceiling was raised to make the room feel expansive. The new corner window floods the kitchen with light and draws the exterior in, giving the sense that one is surrounded by nature.

On the second floor, what was formerly a rabbit’s warren of small rooms and closets has been reorganized into a serene master suite. A sliding reclaimed wood barn door leading to the dressing hall lends a warm material presence to the room. Through the door, a hallway lined with white gloss cabinets on one side and art work on the other functions as a dressing gallery. The hallway opens up to a clean new master bathroom where a wood enclosed tub is bathed in sun from the skylight above. More images can be found at www.aamodtplumb.com/professors-row-renovation
