Project Description
The FAR ROC: For a Resilient Rockaway competition explored best practices and innovative strategies for the planning, design and construction of resilient and sustainable developments in waterfront areas. The site, located in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area Zone A section of the Rockaways, experienced significant storm surge inundation during Hurricane Sandy.
Our entry creates two new residential neighborhoods that integrate architecture, infrastructure, and landscape to create a resilient environment tied to the local context. Raised “land piers” and pile-supported platforms (above the 500 year flood elevation) elevate a variety of residential types, creating a diverse community. Private, public and shared outdoor spaces provide links to the local street network, neighborhood retail, and public transportation. Reinforced primary dunes back the beach front, and a transect of secondary dunes, coastal meadows and forest provide environmental diversity and increased coastal protection. The ensemble of building and landscape provides a community that can thrive year round and withstand storm inundation.
