Project Description

The design of this kitchen dates back to 1998, when the 2000 sq foot Greek Revival house was built. As time passed, more kitchen space was required because the homeowners wanted a larger dining area with built-ins for books and a television. A 40 square foot addition allows for more room for the table and a small sitting area. The kitchen is comprised of a primary volume with three recessed bays containing the windows and doors. These bays are framed by attenuated Ionic aedicules. Renovated on a tight budget, the unconventional use of stock molding profiles achieves a custom look. The necessary cabinetry and appliances are minimally articulated so that the architecture of the bays advances to the foreground. Throughout the room, paint is used as economical and essential compositional tool. Red and black both organize and animate the cabinetry, while the depth of the bays is accentuated with a cooler palette of green and blue. The contrasting whitewashed aedicules act as gateways between the two chromatic worlds. The ionic aedicules and intense color palette is inspired by Pompeian wall paintings. This project deserves an award for architectural interiors because the new bays and intense colors create spacial complexity with minimal additional space and expense.
