Project Description
By removing upwards of 80% of the existing 50 year old outdated buildings at Santa Margarita Elementary School, AlphaStudio Design Group capitalized on this opportunity to restore the character and sense of place to this established campus on Camp Pendleton. The complete site demolition and reconfiguration of the campus allowed for a new central promenade connecting the administrative services to the classrooms, creating a striking view corridor through the site, thereby establishing a new identity for the campus. With a well defined and focused approach, modular building concepts were utilized for the classroom core in the design of this campus. A design strategy based on a standard 12’ x 40’ module allows for maximized efficiency in design. Two existing buildings, the Multi-Purpose and original Library, were fully remodeled with the Library being re-purposed into classrooms to meet programmatic design requirements. In order to create a sense of permanence, the Administration Building, New Library and Kindergarten wing were comprised of site built construction. Additionally, the modular classroom buildings were constructed on concrete foundations at grade level. Finally, we have made use of site built accessory elements, such as entry canopies, and an architectural vernacular to help define and create a relationship between the modular buildings and permanent construction.
