The master bathroom should be a homeowners’ retreat—but how do you accomplish that with a room smaller than your average sheet of plywood? Rachel and David Guerrero found a way in this 24-square-foot bathroom, taking it from cramped and dated to comfortable and functional.
Since expanding the space or changing its footprint wasn’t an option, the Guerreros had to get creative to make it feel larger. They unified the plumbing wall, which includes one wall of the shower, with horizontal wood plank tile. The use of a frameless glass shower door and 12-by-24-inch tile on its remaining two walls helps complete the illusion of expansiveness, and a large mirror over the sink and toilet provides cohesion.
A sleek custom medicine cabinet and floating vanity and shelf also create a spacious feel while adding much-needed storage. A soft, neutral palette is accented by pops of turquoise, including the pebbled tile on the shower floor, to complete the look.–by Laura McNulty
