Project Description
The West Branch Library is a 1909 neo-classical Carnegie Library, consisting of 10,500 SF across three levels. Working closely with the City of Somerville, library staff, trustees, and community members, the designLAB developed an approach that restores the library’s original character, while providing 21st-century spaces, infrastructure and programming.
The project consisted of a gut renovation of the interior spaces, plus a contemporary new addition that complements the historic structure. Clad in copper and largely transparent, the addition welcomes the community with a new, universally accessible entrance, lobby, restrooms, and informal reading room. The reading room opens to the rear garden, which serves as a contemplative space for individuals, as well as small-scale group events.
The historic reading rooms and entry hall on the main level have been largely preserved, as was the entirety of the main stair. Restoration work concentrated around the original hand-stenciled paint details, ornamental plasterwork, and period-appropriate lighting and wood millwork. Original fireplaces have been outfitted with gas inserts, and all spaces were upgraded with new furnishings.
The upper level of the library—formerly occupied by the stacks— houses a vibrant new Children’s area. Loosely organized by age range, the space is organized with dedicated areas for crafts, story time, and group events. Custom, moveable furniture pieces facilitate re-arrangement to support a variety of different uses and events. A multi-purpose community room was strategically inserted into the lower level, serving as a making and teen space, in addition to hosting community events, meetings, and presentations. Though it is located within the existing building, the community room is accessible after-hours for events that occur when the library is closed.
The entirety of the building’s infrastructure has been updated, including new electric, gas, and water services, as well as new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems. The updates also include a new elevator and copper roof.
