Project Description
The major design and planning objectives were to transform a dated kitchen into a contemporary living space taking advantage of an open concept with golf course views. The existing kitchen layout included a typical 1980's design with perimeter soffits, laminate countertops and traditional oak cabinetry. The function of the layout was lacking as it was centered around a small center island creating space challenges for the locations of the appliances and workspace . The initial design concept was a challenge as the angles of the space made for a difficult orientation. We rotated the new center island on an angle and located the main sink with views towards the family room and golf course. Removing a wall between the kitchen and family room enabled the location of the seating to be outside the workspace. When entertaining, guests are able to sit at the peninsula and feel included with those in the kitchen without inhibiting the work flow. Because of the orientation of the new oversized center island we were able to create great compartmentalized work space for each of the professional appliances allowing for multiple "cooks in the kitchen". A perfect selection from Thermador includes 36" Pro range with griddle, 30" electric single oven, under counter microwave drawer, multi program dishwasher and the 24" and 18" refrigeration towers. The angles became a challenge again during the final cabinetry design. The custom cabinetry includes white painted inset doors on the perimeter and full overlay shaker doors with Ebony stain on the island and refrigeration built in. The extensive use of large drawers in the base level provides dedicated space for all the daily use dishes, storage and cookware. A 48" full height pantry with roll out shelving was conveniently tucked out of the main area across from a butlers with fine china display cabinet and linen drawers. Decorative panels on the dishwasher and freestanding refrigeration armoire create a furniture look while concealing the appliances. Oversized polished nickel and gold hardware accents the large panels and enable the full extension soft close under-mount glides to slide with ease. The Super-white quartzite counters and full height back splash provide for a clean white and gray surface but allow for more durability than many of the marble products. The Brushed gold auto touch faucet provide a bit of warmth to the space and serves handy during cooking as the flow is activated with the touch of an arm at any point on the faucet body. The polished nickel electrical fixtures with exposed Edison bulbs give a soft light over the work space with the availability of multiple recess cans if additional lighting is required. We feel the overall challenges were overcome and the finished product exceeded the clients expectations. The dated space was transformed to the contemporary living space for todays open concept living.
