The Stober residence is built on a beautiful piece of property that overlooks a stunning mountain range. The main focus was to build as sustainably and environmentally responsible as possible. From pouring the slab, selecting low VOC paint and choosing locally reclaimed hickory hardwood, this home was built with utmost care and concern for the environment. This home was one of the very first homes in our community to receive the prestigious LEED certification and as such was able to increase public awareness of Green Building and promote its benefits. One of the main challenges with this home was taking an existing lot and Lindal Cedar plan and making it LEED and Energy Star certified. In order to qualify for LEED certification, there had to be minimal site disturbance. This presented a challenge with the Lindal Cedar materials. Materials had to be delivered in stages in order to preserve the ecology and trees surrounding the home. The spacious open floor plan was preserved while maintaining exceptionally high energy efficiency. The landscaping requires no water, is indigenous to the region, and was planted with root stock plants. Permeable stone walkways were built to protect the soil underneath. Being a second residence, the zero maintenance and deer resistant landscaping as well as the extreme low maintenance of the entire home are a significant benefit for the homeowners. Every detail had to be planned from the beginning to ensure that waste was minimal for the health of the environment. Waste materials were separated and recycled. Site management was key in the construction of this home. VPC Builders beautifully incorporated the Lindal Cedar home within the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with sustainability and the environment as the focus, from the planning stages to the completion of the project and beyond.
