Project Description
This project was selected as an Honor winner in the 2024 Residential Architect Design Awards, Specialized Housing category.
“There were a lot of projects that did similar things to this, but there were not a lot of projects that did it with the clarity that this does. And it's quite beautiful. It’s a very rich project with with a very controlled set of moves.” —Juror Rene Gonzalez
Part of a larger youth education program in West Tennessee, this lodging component comprises four cabins with each pair laid out in a U-formation to share a common mudroom, bathhouse, and gathering space. Each cabin in turn accommodates 16 campers and two counselors and holds a flex bedroom for a special-needs camper or extra counselor; flex activity space; kitchenette equipped with a fridge, sink, and microwave ovens; an accessible bathroom; and an outdoor covered porch, the latter of which is elevated on columns as the project sits on uneven hilly terrain.
In addition to the covered decks, where campers enjoy the fresh air and views of a lake and the University of Tennessee’s Lone Oaks Farm, each cabin’s covered gathering space is open on two sides, providing natural cross ventilation. The U-shaped layouts form outdoor courtyards for further gathering and play. The 10,350-square-foot project makes use of an economical and simple palette, incorporating materials such as corrugated metal panels for siding and roofing and locally sourced tongue-and-groove cypress. Colors were used sparingly, mostly to help with wayfinding.
