Project Description
With an eye toward the future, a retired orthopedic surgeon set his sights on an accessible remodel in a historic high-rise in Northwest DC. Looking well beyond grab bars, the repeat client sought kitchen and bathroom updates that would prepare him for just about any eventuality and enable him to age gracefully in place. In the kitchen, an open floor plan with generous 4-foot aisles allows for easy movement between workstations and into the adjoining living area even with a walker or wheelchair. A stainless pole, which now conceals the plumbing stack, is all that remains of the wall the once separating the two rooms. Warm cherry cabinets set the scene with soapstone counters, stainless accents, and celadon walls. The striking mass wall includes a narrow pullout pantry, 24-inch refrigerator column, two freezer drawers, and microwave with pullout shelf below. Rollout shelves keep everyday items within reach, while higher cabinets provide extra storage for seasonal supplies. The perimeter cabinets house an under-counter speed oven, induction cooktop (with scenic window view), and drawer bases for convenient access. Counters measure 32.5 inches in height lower than the usual 36 inches to increase the kitchen’s usability factor. The coordinating island has two levels: the standard-height portion accommodates a dishwasher and wine fridge, while the lower level puts a prep sink and work area within easier reach. As a bonus feature, a fold-down butcher block on the end of the island provides a ready-made station for seated chopping and meal prep. Underfoot, foam rubber tiles provide extra traction and comfort. Designed for use in aquatic environments (think waterparks and pool decks), Life Floor’s slip-resistant tiles are waterproof, low-maintenance, and resistant to stains, mold, and bacteria. Even better, should a fall happen, the cushioned surface softens the landing. The kitchen’s material palette—cabinetry, counters, flooring, and paint color—carries into the bathrooms, where safety and flexibility take center stage. In the master bath, a barrier-free shower includes a generous, fold-up bench and fold-down grab bar for adaptable use. An articulated showerhead and hand shower—with waist-high thermostatic controls—and adjacent corner sink also cater to user preferences and abilities. The floor-to-ceiling curtain, porcelain wall tiles, and linear drain keep water at bay, while a wall-mounted towel warmer adds a touch of luxury. Lastly, a multifunction bidet with grab bar for standing and sitting (and an integrated toilet paper holder) offers better personal hygiene. The powder room also has a bidet, along with a more generous sink and vanity and recessed tall cabinetry for extra storage. Other bathroom features include convenient shelf and niche storage, bright LED lighting, and expansive mirrors.
