Project Description

PROVIDED BY AIA IDAHO:

Syringa Networks, a fiber optic telecommunications provider purchased a building in the historic downtown district of Idaho Falls for their new telecommunications hub and regional offices.

Built in the early 1900’s, the building had been extensively remodeled. A 1940’s addition at the rear of the building was crumbling. Major, mission-critical structural repairs were required to correct past alterations.

The interior of the building was completely gutted. Failing masonry walls and metal decks were replaced. Large steel bracing elements were inserted to support a new front façade. The original bow trusses were exposed, cleaned, and reinforced.

The addition at the rear was converted into specialized rooms for Syringa’s data/telecommunications equipment.

These rooms require massive amounts of cooling, redundant power systems and specialized fire protection systems. A new façade, based on historic photos, was added. This is consistent with the intentional juxtaposition of historic and modern materials throughout the building.

The new entry, reception and waiting areas are now a two-story volume. From the new 2nd floor, “Juliet” balconies are provided overlooking the lower level. The new 2nd floor level is an open office area gathered around a central light well that extends to the first floor.

The new entry is on axis with a central corridor and leads to a large observation window showcasing the client’s secure room of data equipment and cabling. Support spaces, offices and a large conference room line the central corridor. Modern stainless steel pins hold large unframed glass panels in place which are used for interior view windows.
