Project Description

Since 1914, Tastykake has become a true Philadelphia success story. Tasty Baking realized that its Hunting Park facility had grown dated and was no longer adequate for current baking processes and energy consumption. Working with Liberty Property Trust & Synterra Partners, the company selected the Philadelphia Navy Yard location, embracing the history of the site and adding to the revitalization of the area.

The design team created a 345,500 SF building, housing state-of-the-art production and packaging lines as well as a distribution center. The bakery and packaging area houses 7 baking lines and ten varying oven types. The distribution area accommodates large shipping trucks as well as smaller vans for local delivery. Over 20,000 Sf of the space is dedicated to public tour space and office/saff areas. Public tour space includes the lobby featuring Tastykake memorabilia, the Wall of Fame, the Tastykake Theater, Kirby’s Corner Gift Shop and the mezzanine overlooking the baking, packaging, and product lab areas. Receiving LEED Silver certification, the project is a brownfield redevelopment, used local materials, recylced content and includes a rainwater collection system.
