Project Description

FEH Associates was selected to work the Tekamah Library Board, Library Foundation and City Council representative groups to renovate and add-on to their 1916 Carnegie Library.

The main goal the group wanted to accomplish was to make the library accessible to all, with an elevator and a new addition at grade level. The current building is a brick, stone and concrete structure with decorative glass panes at the upper building level. The group felt very strongly about preserving their history by paying respect to it in the new addition. Therefore, FEH took design cues from the existing building. A connecting lobby space creates an open, airy feeling using large window expanses and an upper “porch” element. The main grade level addition replicates the brick and stonework as well as the decorative concrete base which grounds the building. The decorative glass panels and overhang outriggers on the addition are replicas of the originals. The addition will house the children’s and teen areas as well as a staff work area. The existing building will become the adult space with meeting room and restrooms below.
