Tucked between the trees in upstate New York’s Hudson Valley, the TinkerBox was conceived as a car aficionado’s retreat. Designed by local firm Studio MM Architect and built by HV Contemporary Homes, its rectangular form, embedded in the hilly landscape, emerges from a generously sized lower-level garage—which also houses a furniture workshop and spacious wine cellar—to create an open living space that welcomes both intimate and large gatherings in a cozy, fire-lit setting.
The structure, which is located on 10.9 acres, is intended to eventually become a guest house, ensuring privacy for both the clients and their friends. In the primary living space, an expansive window seat with built-in hidden storage anchors the room, and large windows offer glimpses of the seasonal landscape while emphasizing a minimalist aesthetic. Below the picture window, a clever ledge offers a quiet nook for cozying up with a book, or simply taking in the framed views. —Leah Demirjian
