Project Description
The Trex cottage was designed as a weekend outdoor living recreation house. It is located on 10 acres and surrounded by 25 acre winery's, bed & breakfast, farms and wedding facility's. The Middleburg, VA area is known for its equestrian lifestyle and Virginia winery's. When designing this we were trying capture a unique design that exemplifies the outdoor living lifestyle with using modern, low maintenance, green, efficient products. This had to be designed to fit into a woodlands setting. To do this we decided to use the roof as an entertaining area. By building into the side of a hill it blends into the landscape well. We poured a 12" thick concrete foundation, Steel Trex elevation frame and reinforced EPDM roofing with Trex decking on top as a entertainment area. We bent the Trex decking for inlays and rails to match the curves. Trex 1x12 were also bent and used as siding over the concrete foundation above the stone skirt. Keeping a comfortable temperature was key. By building into the side of the hill we knew we could manage the temperature easier. The front has dual pane, gas filled, tinted glass windows and doors. The main door is a 20 ft four track slider that opens 75% (15 ft) for indoor/outdoor flow. The front also has soffit to shield the sun and protect from rain when the doors are left open. We also insulated with 2" of closed cell spray foam with a mold inhibitor and Roxul stone fiber Insulation in the ceiling and walls. Radiant heat was installed in the floor for maximum comfort. In addition we installed 3 ductless heat pumps, a tank-less water heater and cat-6 to all plugs/switches/thermostats for a control 5 automated house unit to be installed. Inside has 2 bedrooms with a queen sofa, 6 bunks, a bath, kitchen, TV room, dining area and a laundry room. Out front there is a 800 sq ft patio and 8 ft fire-pit. The roof boasts a 16x30 Trex Pergola and outdoor kitchen (only in some of the photos since installed after). The are 220 Trex LED lights. This project is featured on the front page of Trex decking brochure, Trex TV commercials, and the 2013/14 Trex Ads in magazines around the world. It also won Trex decking most creative project of 2013. This project is a one of a kind.
