In 2006, the University of Florida (UF) set out to develop a hospital in the medically under-served community of North Jacksonville. The facility would provide healthcare services to residents of the city and surrounding areas, as well as support a local economic boost and fiscal diversity for the institution. Leadership envisioned the project as a community hospital with access to the sophistication and advanced technology traditionally associated with an academic medical center. The hospital would create an environment where community physicians and university physicians can practice side-by-side. UF partnered with Landmark Healthcare Facilities LLC to develop the project.



After several years of planning and design, ground was broken on the 210,000-square-foot, six-story facility in August 2013. The first two floors of the Phase 1 project will house an emergency department, imaging services, women’s health services, operating room suites, interventional rooms, lobby, café and other support services. The top four floors house physician offices.



The team sought to create a hospital that supported a positive patient experience through both aesthetic and function. Once patients arrive on-site, a welcoming and easily navigable campus sets the stage. Public areas help to relax patients, and clinical areas inspire confidence about the care patients will receive. Design details inspired by nature and geometry project quality. Intuitive wayfinding, easy department navigation and minimal boundaries improve the patient experience and staff efficiency. Technology is also seamlessly integrated throughout the hospital.



By maximizing space, Gresham Smith helped to create an economically sustainable facility. On the second floor, the interventional suite design supports the evolving nature of clinical procedures. These range from open-surgery to minimally-invasive, image-guided and endovascular procedures. The creation of flex space between each key room permits the continued, logical adaptation and evolution of the interventional spaces. Renovation can take place within the footprint of each suite, allowing the rest of the department to continue functioning during construction. The philosophy of the Large Imaging module is the same. Radiology, CT and future diagnostic equipment will have varying requirements for shielding and support space. However, the construction footprint can be limited and not disrupt adjacent areas. Small Imaging rooms are generously sized to meet the needs of Dexa, Mammography, Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound.



The completed facility, UF Health Jacksonville North, is set to open in early 2015. It aims to become the region’s first-choice provider for primary and secondary medical services as it continues to expand and add services in years to come.
