Project Description
The United Irish Cultural Center of San Francisco (aka the UICC) is a nonprofit organization aimed to provide all aspects of Irish culture, history and events to its members. Located in the Outer Sunset, the Irish community bootstrapped the building’s original construction in 1973. The center currently holds the first all Irish library in the US, a 400-person capacity event space, a series of non-profit offices and classrooms, and an Irish pub.
Working closely with the UICC and the local community, BANAA has developed a vision for the future of the center, to discover what can and need to be done to keep the Center alive. The 46 year old building, in its current state, is in poor physical condition and unable to sustain itself financially. Through a series of feasibility studies, the UICC has come to the collective conclusion that a larger project, and a vision for the Irish Center, is necessary on this site.
BANAA's proposal includes a new six-story building that is able to accommodate a greater variety of spaces devoted to cultural programming - and one that will be able to sustain itself and keep the Irish dream alive for many generations to come.
