The 2017 Teachers of Lighting Workshop (TOLW) will take place June 11 – 16, 2017, at the Philips Lighting Application Center is Somerset, N.J. The program is sponsored by the Illuminating Engineering Society (ies.org) and The Lighting Application Center (LAC), which is located at Philips Lighting’s North American headquarters. The six-day workshop is open to full-time and part-time academic faculty who currently teach lighting in programs of Interior Design; Theatre; Building Science; Architecture; Engineering; and Technology, and is designed to offer intensive exposure to design, science, and technology issues pertaining to the study of illumination. The course outline assumes some basic knowledge of lighting and is structured around individual and team work.

The 2017 workshop will cover the following topics: lighting terms; lighting calculations; interior and exterior lighting design; psychological aspects of light; electrical control; light sources (LED and conventional); lighting economics; sustainable design; the design process; vision and color; codes; luminaires; energy management; computers as a tool; optical control; light and health; and daylighting and controls. The workshop will also include an evening in New York City, “…working on a lighting project in Times Square sponsored by Philips.”

Applicants are asked to submit the following materials for review:· Letter of Intent (should include faculty and tenure status, lighting background, and how the workshop will impact the lighting program the individual teaches at);
· Curriculum Vitae;
· Description of lighting course/curriculum at your home institution; and
· Letter from the Department Head or Dean. The letter must state “…the extent of your institution's commitment to lighting education.”

Applications are due March 20, 2017 and applicants will be notified in April if they have been accepted to the workshop.
