The Modern Smoke Detector by San Francisco-based Architectural Devices brings good looks to a mundane product. “Frustrated with these eyesores in the spaces I’ve designed, I felt determined to re-imagine [them],” says designer and company co-founder Jason Rosenblatt. The hard-wired device is 6 inches square with a ¼-inch reveal and has a photoelectric sensor and 9-volt backup battery. It can be painted for a custom look. Architectural Devices, 650.954.6124
