Project Description
Aedas designed a skyscraper to house luxurious hotel Mandarin Oriental as part of a mixed-use development in Chengdu, China. The project was highly commended in the hotel architecture category at the Asia Pacific Hotel Awards 2013.
The building façades of the two towers within the development are inspired by the artistic context of two National Treasure paintings – ‘Three Visits to a Thatched Cottage’ by Dai Jin of the Ming Dynasty and ‘Painting of Water’ by Ma Yuan from the Southern Song Dynasty.
The design of the other tower provides a smooth transition from solid colour to white between different levels, reminding people of Minya Konka, the highest mountain in Sichuan. A glacier-themed bar, echoing the river of ice found at the foot of Minya Konka, is set on the top floor to create a world class venue for social interaction.
A significant timber structure is adopted as outdoor canopy for the hotel’s banquet and the roof shading is themed to feature classical Chinese fans. The floating banquet hall is meticulously shaped to resemble the graceful gesture of an egret spreading its wings over the Jinjiang River.
