This week, we're sharing projects from Ethiopia to Philadelphia, Brazil, and New Orleans, with several stops in between. In addition to the projects that we cover in detail, we highlight work that architecture firms share with us every day through Project Gallery, the user-generated portion of ARCHITECT's website. To date, we have more than 16,000 projects.

A Heart, Walmara, Ethiopia
Khaled Abou Taam Architects and Atelier
"Our main objective is flexibility in use of spaces and possibility of adding new areas if they are needed. The design proposal of 'a heart' is presented as 2 wings separated by 2 entrances, main and secondary."

Kokedama Forest, Philadelphia
Nomad Studio
"Kokedama Forest is a 1,000-square-foot miniature sculptural forest consisting of more than 1,200 forestry seedling kokedamas nested within an inverted dome carved out from a fragile and intricate metal network."

Bamboo, Royal Oak, Mich.
Synecdoche Design Studio
"In the midst of an office culture paradigm shift, Bamboo’s second location offers open co-working, private offices, amenity, and event spaces addressing the flux of workspace needs in new hybrid models. The adaptive reuse project converts a historic furniture store into a new community hub."

The Franklin School Early Learning Center, Spartanburg, S.C.
RDG Planning & Design
"Layout for the 28,000-square-foot building is designed to mimic building blocks, with spaces dedicated to formal classroom and programmatic functions, and informal gathering interspersed throughout."

Thompson Hine, Office Renovation, Cincinnati
GBBN Architects
"Sliding glass interior doors make spaces flexible so they can expand to accommodate groups and events."

Hospital Sancta Maggiore Morumbi, São Paulo
Perkins&Will Architects
"Floor-to-ceiling frames allows the entry of natural light and access to the view, which directly collaborate with the reduction of stress and depression in patients, companions, and collaborators. The pre-existing helipad in the tower allows trauma care and the transport of patients between units."

Dhamaka, New York
Wid Chapman Architects
"Our client’s brief was to create a restaurant that was fun and representative of Indian 'wabi-sabi'—known as 'jugaad' in Hindi—the idea that there is art and use in broken things … that the non-conventional can be useful and valuable, a nod to the innovative spirit of humanity."

The Wing SoHo, New York
Alda Ly Architecture
"In 2019, ALA led the space’s 10,000-square-foot expansion onto the building’s fourth floor. Historic elements were interlaced with progressive interventions throughout; minimalistic lighting was paired with the original tin ceiling and the floor was clad in 7-inch-wide planks."

Gayle and Tom Benson Jesuit Center, New Orleans
Trahan Architects
"Located on a quad outside Monroe Hall, the new Chapel of St. Ignatius and Gayle and Tom Benson Jesuit Center will be a circular-shaped and light-filled modern building that draws on aspects of Jesuit spirituality and the natural world for its architecture and design."

Legacy House, Columbus, Ohio
Moody Nolan
Tucked into Columbus, Ohio’s Linden neighborhood, the Legacy House serves as an inaugural example of a new housing initiative from the local firm Moody Nolan. Aimed at addressing the country's affordable housing crisis, the mortgage-free Legacy House is donated to a family experiencing homelessness, providing them with a property that becomes "equity for them to take the next step," says Moody Nolan co-founder and chairman of the board Curtis Moody, FAIA. The project—one of 12 Legacy Houses that the firm will build—exemplifies Moody Nolan's commitment to empowering communities around the country, a commitment that helped the firm win the 2021 AIA Architecture Firm Award. You can read more about the firm's history-making win, here. You can also read the conversation that Moody Nolan CEO Jonathan Moody, AIA, had with ARCHITECT executive editor Wanda Lau as part of the magazine's One Year Later series covering changes within the architecture profession in the year after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, here.
