Loud Shadows—a joint project by Berlin-based Plastique Fantastique with composer Kate Moore, the Stolz Quartet, and dance company LeineRoebana, all based in Amsterdam—is an inflatable, monumental, partially transparent, plastic structure designed for the Oerol theater festival on Terschelling island in the Netherlands. Loud Shadows' creators designed a pneumatic structure to house dance and music performances, and the transparent skin offers a lucid yet whimsical view of the surrounding environment. Every June since 1982, the 10-day Oerol festival has taken place across the entire 260-square-mile island (Oerol means 'all over' in the local dialect). During the festival, the island is transformed into "a unique natural stage for theater, dance, street theater, art and music," according to the festival's website. This year's Oerol is now open and running until June 18.
