Virginia Tech’s design/buildLAB offers students opportunities to practice long before licensure by executing their architectural designs into built works through collaboration with local professionals. Esto photographer Jeff Goldberg has documented the construction and completion of three of the program’s built works: The Covington Farmers Market in Covington, Va., and the Masonic Amphitheatre and Smith Creek Pedestrian Bridge in Clifton Forge, Va. Modular construction and prefabricated parts comprise the twisted roof of the Covington Farmers Market, which received a 2011 Design Excellence Award from AIA Virginia. The Masonic Amphitheatre uses materials salvaged from a warehouse that occupied the site prior to its conversion into stage and band shell, again employing a twist to transform surfaces from wall to roof; an adjacent pedestrian bridge constructed out of concrete, steel, white oak, and composite panels—the most recent project by design/buildLAB—crosses a gorge between the new amphitheater and the historic town center.
