Firm Description

Wilson Butler Architects is an award-winning, innovative and collaborative design studio specializing in arts and entertainment experiences. Our directors, Scott Wilson, Scott Butler, and Tom Hains, bring our clients over 120 years of expertise and a deep understanding of the sophisticated requirements and creative nuances that make today’s best-performing arts centers, historic theaters, academic arts facilities, and high-tech entertainment venues.

Our design approach allows us to share a common language with both our clients and the end users of a space throughout the life of a project. It means we ask a lot of questions: Is a new space intended to better support world-class classical performances, to deliver mind-blowing entertainment innovation, to encourage educational discovery, to strengthen ties with the community, or all of the above? We are committed to a holistic approach and an ongoing dialogue that invites all stakeholders to contribute their individual perspectives, concerns, and needs. Why? Because we believe a thorough understanding of a project’s optimal usage best guides the many design decisions that go into creating a unique experience and a thriving arts and entertainment venue that will stand the test of time.

Collaboration, like conversation, is a balance of listening, talking, identifying, teaching, shaping, and reshaping. Our process is built on an ongoing dialogue that supports client ownership and guides responsive design. Our directors and senior staff guide each project with care, humor, creative responsiveness, and a passionate commitment to each client every step of the way—from programming and fundraising to ground-breaking and opening night. Designing in a transparent method, we invite all project participants to be as fully invested in the design outcome as we are.
