In this episode, we sat down with Art Gensler, FAIA, who opened his namesake architecture firm in 1966 at the age of 30, when he was in town last month to receive the 2016 George M. White Award for Excellence in Public Architecture from the nonprofit American Architectural Foundation. We talked with him about the firm’s half-century transition from a small, back-office shop in San Francisco to one that employs more than 5,000 people across 46 offices globally, developing a company culture, and how architects can learn to be better business leaders. We also discussed some of the management principles that Gensler lays out in his 2015 manifesto, Art’s Principles: 50 Years of Hard-Learned Lessons in Building a World-Class Professional Services Firm (Wilson Lafferty, 2015).
