The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has gathered photographs, drawings, plans, and other items documenting the extensive refurbishment of Villa Tugendhat. Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1928, the steel, glass, and concrete house is the only example of modern architecture in the Czech Republic. The villa’s two-year restoration was completed a few months ago, and the house opened for tours in March.
In addition to the Villa Tugendhat displays, RIBA curators used materials from their extensive archives to present some of Mies van der Rohe’s other work in Europe and the U.S., giving context to how the villa fits into the renowned architect’s development. The exhibition is on display in the British Architectural Library from June 19 through Aug. 19. A discussion and a student seminar both take place on July 3 in conjunction with the show.
