Modernism at Risk: Modern Solutions for Saving Modern Landmarks is an exhibition organized by the World Monuments Fund (WMF) to help bring awareness to the Modernist architectural landmarks that are at risk for demolition or decay. The display includes oversized photographs by noted architectural photographer and artist Andrew Moore, as well as panels describing the buildings. The panels also list examples of how designers and students have helped and can continue to help devise solutions for saving the structures.
The five buildings highlighted by the WMF are listed below and shown in the accompanying slideshow.
The ADGB Trade Union School in Bernau, Germany, by Bauhaus director Hannes Meyer
The A. Conger Goodyear House in Old Westbury, N.Y., by Edward Durell Stone (This house was saved from demolition by WMF in 2001.)
Riverview High School in Sarasota, Fla., by Paul Rudolph (The school was demolished in 2009.)
The Grosse Pointe Public Library in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., by Marcel Breuer
The Kent Memorial Library in Suffield, Conn.—the only freestanding building designed by interior/furniture designer Warren Platner
Modernism at Risk will be on display at the new AIA NC headquarters in Raleigh, N.C. The show runs from June 1-9. It is free for AIA NC members and open to the general public for nominal fees. Each evening, local architects will host public viewing hours where they will show some of their work. The exhibition currently does not have future locations planned, but architecture organizations and schools can apply to host the show by emailing [email protected].
