Wilkinson Eyre Architects' Bay South Garden In Singapore Uses Carbon-Neutral Cooling And Other Sustainable Features To Keep This Garden Conservatory Green.
Wilkinson Eyre Architects has completed the Bay South Garden in Marina Bay, Singapore. The Bay South Garden is the first of the three parts of the government of Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay project, for which Wilkinson Eyre collaborated with Grant Associates to provide the winning entry in a 2006 competition for this parcel. The Bay South Garden features two steel-and-glass conservatories with distinct climates engineered by Atelier Ten: the Flower Dome—1.28 hectares (3.16 acres) of cool/dry climate—and the Cloud Forest—0.73 hectares (1.80 acres) of cool/moist climate. These conservatories vaunt sustainable attributes such as carbon-neutral cooling and a computer-controlled shading system. The façades use low-E glazing to maximize light transmission and minimize solar heat gain, with the fabric shading system controlling light levels on sunny days. Also providing energy for the site are a grove of Grant Associate–designed ‘‘Supertrees’’ that shade the site, exhaust heat from the conservatory buildings, and collect solar energy in their photovoltaic canopies.
