This project was selected as a Merit winner in ARCHITECT's 2024 Architecture & Interiors Awards, Interiors: Lobby and Amenity Space category.
“It had a consistency between the spaces, that kind of through line. And I liked the stairway—a little moment of whimsy in the project.” –Juror John Frane
The Landon is a 340-unit residential building situated on West 43rd Street. Over two decades old, the site required extensive renovations to stay competitive with nearby developments and capitalize on its proximity to Hudson Yards.
For the aesthetic concept, JGNA drew inspiration from the area's history as a transportation hub near the meatpacking district and its rail connections to the southwest. Influences from southwestern landscapes, including photography by Neukomm, subtly informed the design and color palette, particularly in the main lounge on the second floor and the rooftop lounges.
Significant changes were made to the lobby, amenity, and fitness spaces. JGNA relocated the main amenity space from its original low-ceiling location to a double-height area to the south, previously a gym and basketball court. This impressive, column-free space with nearly 18-foot ceilings was kept open, while the lounge was divided into various functional areas with an oversized planter housing four new trees in the center.
The renovation also included creating a new rooftop lounge and exterior space, with an entrance and prep kitchen located in a former unit below. The interior lounge frames sunset views of Hudson Yards to the south with new oversized windows, and a lift connects the lower-level entry to the new lounge area. An organic, undulating feature stair links the two interior spaces, harmonizing with the tones of the lounge below. A minimal canopy was designed for the exterior roof deck to provide shade and organize the space.
