Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) won the competition to design what will be the tallest building in Scandinavia: Polstjärnan (the Polestar Tower) in Gothenburg, Sweden, will top out at just under 755 feet tall.

SOM is working with Copenhagen, Denmark–based firm Entasis and consulting group COWI. An observation deck will top the residential tower, which will also include a public restaurant. The project also involves a master plan for a 1.5 million square foot mixed-use surrounding neighborhood. The tower is expected to be completed by 2019.

The team beat out four other shortlisted projects: Kyssen (the Kiss) by Ian Simpson Architets and Wsp Sverige; Ursa by Manuelle Gautrand Architecture, Equator Stockholm, Terrell Group, and Bengt Dahlgren Stockholm; Glasklart (Crystal Clear) by Wingårdh arkitektkontor and WSP group; and Svall (Swell) by Zaha Hadid Architects.
