The American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for Education—a collective of more than 10,000 architects and allied professionals focused on designing innovative educational, recreational, and cultural centers—has bestowed its 2023 Education Facility Design Award upon 13 facilities located in the United States and Mexico. The annual program recognizes standout new construction, addition, and renovation projects that run the gamut of early childhood and K-12 environments, colleges and universities, museums, libraries, and community centers that enhance learning, incorporate sustainability practices, honor their surrounding communities, and balance form and function.
The jury for the 2023 Education Facility Design Award comprised chair Lori Cappuccio, AIA, SmithGroup in Washington, D.C.; Omar Bailey, AIA, Shepley Bulfinch in Phoenix; Vince Gonzales, Seattle Public Schools; Kandis Larsen, AIA, Integrus+YGH in Spokane, Wash.; and Sindu Meier, AIA, William Rawn Associates in Boston. Together, the jurors selected four projects to receive Awards of Excellence—given to architects that demonstrate excellence in their practice and designs that meet a host of criteria decided upon by the jury. Nine facilities deemed high quality were given Awards of Merit.
