This week, we're sharing projects from Chicago to Shanghai, Ontario, and Mexico, with several stops in between. In addition to the projects that we cover in detail, we highlight work that architecture firms share with us every day through Project Gallery, the user-generated portion of ARCHITECT's website. To date, we have more than 16,000 projects for your browsing.
333 North Green, Chicago
Gensler
"It utilizes a horizontal and vertical mullion rhythm to establish a scale and language that lends itself to the historic context of the neighborhood while seamlessly connecting the building to Chicago as a modern high-rise within the city’s skyline."
Newark School of Architecture and Design, Newark, N.J.
CTS Group Architecture/Planning PA
"One of many challenges in the design was the adaptive reuse of the hospital, a 127,000-square-foot, five-story reinforced concrete structure with over 200 hospital rooms into design studios, classrooms, support spaces, and shop classes for high skilled trades."
Wilde Sering, Pretoria, South Africa
Orton Architects
"Some external cladding elements are allowed to weather and rust, imitating the natural hues and colors of the bushveld. A rusted steel door constructed from an old railway carriage slides open to reveal the main living area."
Library in Ruins, Xiuwu, China
Atelier XI
"The undulating outline of the roof echoes the terrain and distant mountains, and the roof ground naturally forms an outdoor terrace and a slide for children. The interior space functions not only as a stepped library, but also as a small projection room."
Shanghai BU Center, Shanghai
Aedas
"The design takes inspiration from the classical Chinese gardens from Jiangnan. They are constructed landscapes of rocks, hills, and rivers, harmoniously integrated with the architecture elements."
Casa M28, Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico
BCA Taller de Diseño
"As part of the volumetric strategy and the best use of the land, one of the levels was buried allowing different readings of the same project and achieving that from different points it is presented lower than it actually is."
Orléans Health Hub, Orléans, Ontario
HDR
"Extending its influence beyond the traditional brick and mortar approach to healthcare, the Hub serves as the new model of care, providing community outreach, support programs, and retail options all within the message of sustainable health and wellness."
Baja, Baja, Mexico
Walker Warner Architects
"The structural form, concrete walls, and site orientation work together to withstand seasonal storms and hurricanes."
Seminary Hill Orchard and Cidery, Callicoon, N.Y.
River Architects
Located in New York's Hudson Valley, this two-story, 9,300-square-foot cidery—the world's first passive house certified cidery—merges green building strategies with sustainable agricultural practices. The local firm River Architects designed the project, incorporating nods to traditional agrarian forms and striking features including an open-air entry clad in wood slats. You can read more about the project, featured in ARCHITECT's 2021 September Sustainability Issue, here.
