The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced yesterday that CEO Rick Fedrizzi, Hon. AIA, will not his renew his contract at the end of 2016. After co-founding USGBC in 1993, Fedrizzi served as its volunteer founding chair the first six years and then became president and CEO in 2003.
In 2009 he also took over as CEO of the then-newly created Green Building Certification Institute (now Green Business Certification Inc.), a third-party organization that provides credentialing and certification services for the USGBC's LEED rating system, the Well Building Standard, and other rating systems.
"Our programs are thriving, our structure has evolved to support our global growth and influence, and our financials are in excellent shape," Fedrizzi said in his emailed letter to the USGBC community. "USGBC has reached a point in its maturity where I feel comfortable making this decision, knowing that I will continue to contribute to the ongoing trajectory of the green building movement as a volunteer in any way I can."
Fedrizzi also serves on several boards and advisory committees, including the Center for Health and the Global Environment at the Harvard School of Public Health, Delos, Watsco, and the World Green Building Council, which he chaired from 2011 to 2013. In his resignation letter, he did not state whether he will remain active in these roles.
The USGBC's board of directors has established a search committee to identify candidates to transition into the CEO position by January 2017.
