On the public opening day of the 13th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, the big news was, of course, the announcement of the Golden and Silver Lion award winners, as well as the special jury mentions. Folks on twitter captured moments such as Justin McGuirk (who won the Golden Lion for best project for his exhibition, with Urban-Think Tank, on the transformation of the Torre David skyscraper in Venezuela) on a vaporetto, statue in tow; reactions from the special-mention-winning “Spontaneous Interventions” at the U.S. Pavilion; and scenes from the Japanese Pavilion, which won the Golden Lion award for best national exhibition. There were sightings of Peter Zumthor, of people’s own names appearing in exhibitions, and ever-more shots from the various national pavilions on display.
